Transfer students are a very diverse group, and supporting transfer students is crucial for equity in higher education. They are more likely to be first generation and students of color. They are also a group for whom sense of belonging can be a particular challenge, as they will need to find it at multiple institutions over shorter timeframes. The goal of this session, designed to be a part of the Connect Track at the SSRC, is to engage in a participatory conversation and provide attendees with a short list of practices to try at their institutions. Connection is at the center of all of PSUs Transfer and Returning Student Resource Centers work. This looks like institutional collaboration with community college partners, cross-campus connection with identity resource and academic support centers, events designed to cultivate connection and community among transfer students, and connections between faculty and student affairs professionals to support transfer students. The 60 minute workshop will share lessons and successes from the TRSRC and give participants the opportunity to reflect on the current practices at their institutions and make a plan to implement a stronger web of connections to enhance support of future and current transfer students.
Suggested Audience: Faculty/Instructors, Student Services Staff, Instructional Services Staff, Campus Leadership
